uPVC Door Won’t Lock?
uPVC doors and windows are increasingly popular choices in the UK for their durability and energy efficiency. However, like any locking system, issues can arise, affecting your home’s security. When your uPVC lock goes stiff, out of alignment, or starts sticking, it becomes a security risk very quickly. Most issues with uPVC doors start small (difficulty lifting the handle / having to “slam” the door / key getting tricky to turn) — and then suddenly fail. We diagnose and fix these problems professionally, using the correct tools and techniques, and we always aim to repair first before replacing parts.
Below are common problems with uPVC locks, why they occur, and why consulting a local locksmith is your best course of action.
Common issues with uPVC door and window locks:
Misalignment:
Over time, uPVC doors and windows may shift or settle, causing misalignment in the locking mechanism. This misalignment can lead to difficulty in locking or unlocking the door or window.
Worn-Out Mechanism:
Continuous use can wear out the internal components of the lock, such as the gearbox or cylinder, resulting in decreased functionality and security.
Key Snapped in Lock:
Keys can snap in the lock due to various factors, including age, excessive force, or a worn key. This issue can leave you locked out or compromise the security of your property.
Jammed Locks:
External factors like dirt, debris, or adverse weather conditions can contribute to jammed locks, making it challenging to operate the uPVC door or window.
Why addressing uPVC lock issues is important:
Home Security:
The primary function of uPVC locks is to secure your home. Any issues with the lock compromise the overall security of your property, leaving it vulnerable to potential intruders.
Energy Efficiency:
Well-functioning locks contribute to the energy efficiency of uPVC doors and windows. A faulty lock may result in gaps, affecting insulation and increasing energy costs.
Convenience:
A smoothly operating lock enhances the convenience of using uPVC doors and windows. Issues like difficulty in locking or unlocking can disrupt your daily routine.
When to call a local locksmith:
Difficulty in Locking or Unlocking:
If you find it increasingly difficult to lock or unlock your uPVC door or window, it’s a sign of an underlying issue that a locksmith can diagnose and fix.
Key Breakage or Loss:
If your key breaks in the lock or if you’ve lost your keys, a locksmith can provide key extraction or replacement services, ensuring secure access to your home.
Visible Wear and Tear:
Visible wear on the lock, handles, or other components should not be ignored. A locksmith can assess the extent of the damage and recommend necessary repairs or replacements.
Jammed Locks or Mechanism Failure:
If the lock is jammed or the mechanism has failed, a locksmith has the expertise to identify the cause and implement the appropriate fix.

FAQs
Why has my uPVC door handle suddenly become really stiff to lift?
A stiff handle usually means the internal gearbox is starting to fail or the door is now slightly out of alignment. If you force it, the gearbox can crack — and then the door can fail completely. We can usually fix this before it reaches that point with a simple adjustment and lubrication of the mechanism.
Do I have to replace the whole uPVC locking strip, or can it be repaired?
In most cases, the locking strip doesn’t need replacing. We often repair or replace the specific failed component (like the gearbox or centre case) and leave the rest of the mechanism in place. This is normally far cheaper than a full strip replacement. If it does need replacing – we will explain this fully and give you a fixed price before starting any work.
My uPVC lock works perfectly some days and terribly on others — why?
Temperature changes cause uPVC doors to expand and contract. This can throw the alignment very slightly off. When this happens, the key or handle can feel perfect in the morning and terrible in the evening. A small adjustment usually solves this — and prevents long-term damage.
